கொலன்னாவை பகுதியில் உள்ள அவரது வீட்டில் வைத்தே காலை 6.45 அளவில் கைது செய்யப்பட்டதாக தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
அசாத் சாலி அண்மையில் இந்தியாவிற்கு பயணம் மேற்கொண்டிருந்த போது வெளியிட்ட கருத்துகள் காரணமாக பயங்கரவாத தடைச் சட்டத்தின் கீழ் இந்த கைது இடம்பெற்றதாக குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.
அண்மைக்காலமாக அசாத் சாலி பாதுகாப்இலங்கை அரசு மற்றும் பொதுபல சேனா போன்ற அமைப்புக்களுக்கு எதிராகக் கருத்துக்களைத் தெரிவித்துவரும் ஆசாத் தமிழ் முஸ்லிம் மக்கள் மத்தியில் ஆதரவைப் பெற்றுவருகின்றார். இவரின் அரசியல் பிரசன்னத்தை அரசின் அங்கமாக ஒட்டிக்கொண்டுள்ள முஸ்லிம் காங்கிரசும் விரும்பியிருக்கவில்லை என்பதும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.பு பிரிவினரால் பின்தொடரப்பட்டு வந்த நிலையில் இன்று காலை கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளார்.இவர் நான்காம் மாடிக்கு அழைக்கப்பட்டு விசாரணைகளுக்கு உட்படுத்தப்பட்டார்.
அரசாங்கத்திற்கு எதிரான கருத்துக்களைக்கூட அரசசார்புக் குழுக்களே முன்வைக்கும் பாசிசச் சூழலில் தமிழ்ப் பேசும் முஸ்லிம்கள் மத்தியிலிருந்து கைதான முக்கிய அரசியல்வாதியாக ஆசத் அலி கருதப்படுகின்றார்.
