CONFLICTS are not created by Rebels or their leaders. On the contrary conflicts create rebels and rebellion.In ‘Ceylon’ (as ‘Sri Lanka’ is a name given by the then governments illegally against the safeguards enshrined in the First Independent Constitution Sec.29 (2) C and without the participation of Tamils in the so called Constitution Assembly). All Democratic agitations and negotiations by Tamils failed due to the intrasigencies of the majoritarian Sinhala governments, be it that of UNP or SLFP. So the inevitable result was the birth of Tamil Rebels of various colurs and hues finally ending up with LTTE as the sole rebellion Group which fact was accepted by the negotioators in the Cease fire agreement (CFA) with the Government signed by Government of Sri Lanka and LTTE leader. It is naive to expect democratic treatment of ‘disent’/ers’from a militaristic group. Long before LTTE or any other Tamil group dealt a single shot, the GOSL has started ‘massacre of Thamils’. Starting from the Massacre of Thamils in Igniyagala in 1956. All other massacres of Thamils are well documented now. It is sad that the so called neutralists, intellectuals and ‘socialists'(NIS) among Thamils seldom criticise the GOSL massacres and tortures and extra-judicial killings. In fact a lawfully and or democratically (?) elected government has the double responsibilty to safeguard its citizens due to its statutory obligations. The so called NIS are very keen to condemn rebel groups for Human Rights violations and do not do so in the case of the Government’s violations. And what did the so called Socialists win over for the Tamils using their democratic and highly intellectual talents? Sweet nothing. Did not people like V.Ponnampalam who contested against S>J>V> Chelvanayagam and his Vaddukoddai Resolution became disillusioned with the SINHALA Communists and became a Tamil Nationalist at the end. Did not Shanmugathasan state towards his tail end thatLTTE is much better than the JVP and the Pseudo Socialists as they area t least loyal to what they believed is correct. On another count, most of the Tamil diaspora intelectuals or who pose as intellectuals have come over to the west even before the massaacre of Tamils in 1977, leave alone 1983 pogrom against Tamils. So they have not felt or seen the undemocratic, dictatorial, tortures and massacres of Tamils or the effects of the draconialn Emergency Regulations or PTA. It is no wonder then that some of them even publicly declare that they are proud to call themselves as ‘Sri Lankans’. O>K> now LTTE is no more, what has those who were criticising LTTE for fighting a bloody war violently done or doing to gain the rights of the Tamils or to stop all human rights violation against the innocent people including the Sinhala journalists? They don’t even criticise those acts.
