I can see lot of unfair criticisms above directed against the lecturers and administration. Before commenting all should at least take the time to read the entire link news. It clearly says dress codes will be equally applicable to students and staff . Therefore stop attacking the lecturers in unfair manner. I believe the dress code (especially for medical students) in a university is important for the following reasons.
1. They learn the socially acceptable attire. Patients and clients expect decent dress and they respect the professionals when they are in uniforms. I have seen many instances in hospital and other places where a doctor who was not properly dressed was subjected to improper treatment by the patients and other category of staff.
Leaving aside that the Health Ministry has specified dress code all the leading private hospitals and other private institutions have their dress codes because that improve the respect from the clients and customers.
I believe one of the objective of university education is not only to produce educated graduates but also produce professionals who can work with dignity.
Once I was chairing a research paper session at SLMA and one professor in medicine presented his paper wearing a T-shirt. almost all among the audience were disgusted with this arrogant behaviour and one of the judges were commenting to me that in future we have to inform the paper presenters about a dress code.
when I was a student I was thinking in the same way as you think that dress code affects the freedom of students. But when you become senior you will realize that when subordinates, juniors and students wearing casual attire in learning/ hospital environment that become unpleasant to you as well as to others. There have been instances when I was doing my internship and SJGH and Kegalle Hospital patients have complained against the dress worn by lady doctors who were educated overseas. But on the other hand dress code is followed by all leading institutions whether you take it Oxford or Harvard.
Saree is accepted as part of sri lankan culture whether the person is Sinhalese, Tamil or Muslim. I see no reason why a lady staff or student cannot wear it at least one day in a week.
2. Dress code minimize expenditure on dress and the time spent to choose what dress should be worn today.
3. it minimize sexual harassment and other misconducts.

சுத்தமாக உடையணிந்து வாருங்கள் என்று கேட்பது வேறு. இன்ன உடையைத்தான் நீ அணிய வேண்டும் என்று ஆணையிடுவது வேறு.

உடை என்பது காலத்திற்குக் காலம் மாறுகின்ற ஒன்று. இன்று அவசர அவசரமாகப் புறப்பட்டு பஸ்ஸில் தொங்கிக் கொண்டு போகின்ற நிலையில் சிக்கென்று உடலைப் பிடிக்கத்தக்க எளிதில் அணியத்தக்க உடை அணிய விரும்புவார்களா அல்லது கட்டுவதற்குக் கடினமாயும் அவிழ்ப்பதற்குச் சுலபமாயும் இருக்கின்ற எங்கே அவிழ்ந்து விடுமோ என்று பயங்கொள்ள வைக்கின்ற சேலை அணிவார்களா?
இவ்வளவு பேசுகின்ற மூதவை அல்லது பேரவை உறுப்பினர்கள் வாழ்நாள் பூராக வேட்டி பஞ்சகச்சம் சால்வை அல்லது சேலை தான் அணிந்தார்களா? அல்லது அவ்வாறு அணிந்து கொண்டு பஸ்ஸில் பல்கலைக் கழகத்திற்கு வரத் தயாரா?
