Dear Friends,
Great sadness filled me when I heard the news about the death of Comrade Pararajasingham . On the several occasions when I had the pleasure to meet him, he was always a very simple, hospitable and socially active and engaged person. I met him first in November 1977 after my release from prison. Comrade Rohana Wijeweera and I visited him and Comrade Bala Tampoe and other supporters at the Ceylon Mercantile Union (CMU) to express our thanks for their help during our seven years of imprisonment. At this stage Comrade Para was an active leader of the CMU.
In Sri Lanka , his life was dedicated to protecting and upholding the democratic rights of working people, particularly trade union members. In tandem with Comrades Bala, Rajanayagam and Seneviratne of the CMU they pioneered the protection of human and democratic rights of cadres in the JVP who were being held in detention at the time.
The last time I met him was in Stuttgart Germany when I attended a meeting of the International Network of the Sri Lankan Diaspora which was being held in Berlin , he was still carrying on the struggle. He did not strike me as a politician in the base sense of the word, but one who worked with a deep and abiding interest towards the betterment and advancement of all Sri Lankans wherever they resided. Comrade Para with his genuine and never fading smile on his face carried on his life long commitment to helping his fellow human beings.
Comrade Para’s knowledge of the trade union movement and the Tamil Liberation struggle in Sri Lanka was extensive and exemplary.
I cannot realistically point to everything Comrade Para had contributed to and accomplished during his life time in Sri Lanka and as an expatriate, but I can say that he was an incredibly inspiring political character. From what I have heard from other sources, his talents and interests extended beyond the arenas of politics and human rights.
Comrade Para’s passing will leave an enormous gap that no one will be able to fill single handedly. His political legacy for progressive Sri Lankans both at home and abroad was meaningful, truthful and alive.
As a fellow traveller, I take this opportunity to pay tribute to and politically honour him. My deepest sympathies extend to his wife Malika and their children.

A tribute to Prarajasingam
Dear Friends,
It was one of Sri Lankas saddest days. Comrade Pararajasingam died on the 16th of December 2007 – his Birthday.
He leaves behind his wife, his daughter Uma and his Son Shanthush and grandchildren.
He was born on 16th of December 1935 in Nallur Sri Lanka. He was a Student in Jaffna Hindu College. After he completed his A Levels, he studied first Mathematics and later Economic Science at the University of Colombo. In the 60´s he worked in the Fishery Cooperation as chief accountant. At this time he became a trade union activist. He was a leading activist in the CMU (Ceylon Mercantile Union).
He married Malika, a Sighala human rights activist from Colombo in1966 against the protest of many relatives and from 1966 to till his death they were a happy couple, spending their days together.
In the 70´s he was very active in the Human Rights activities and he continued Political Liberation struggle together with Balathambu. He was engaged in the release of JVP members, who were imprisoned after 1971 insurgency.
After the July 1983 violence, he had to leave Sri Lanka. From then on he lived in Stuttgart Germany, but never gave up his political work. He founded first the Tamil Rights Committee and in 1985 started a Tamil Magazine Called “Sinthanai” together with many other democratic Tamils. He was also a founder Member of “Ilakiychanthipu” (Tamil Literary organisation), which was founded in 1988 and he was an activist and founding supporter of the German Tamil Womens Rights Association. He was also a good photographer and his contribution to the 3rd world groups in the late 80´s in Germany was important.
At the beginning of the new Millennium he moved to Berlin. He continued his activities from there, becoming an active member of the International Network of Sri Lankan Diaspora, and this year in April he represented together with other NGO´s the INSD in discussion with German Bundestag (Parlament) Members in Berlin.
I cannot describe the agony. He leaves a great irreplaceable gap in Sri Lankan Human Rights and Political activity arround Tamil and English literature.
He all ways live among us.
We all share the agony with Malika, Uma, Santhush and the rest of the family.
